Week Seven Reflection: 7 Habits

Of the seven habits in "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen R. Covey, Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind stands out to me the most. This habit really stresses the need to have a personal vision and to be intentional about our lives, basically, it’s about mapping out what you want for yourself before diving in. It’s all about living with purpose instead of just going through the motions or getting lost in the chaos of everyday life.

This habit hits home because it pushes us to think about our legacy, how we want to be remembered, what values we want to embrace, and the impact we want to leave behind. Covey’s idea that “all things are created twice, first mentally, then physically” has really changed how I view my goals, both short and long term. It motivates me to write a personal mission statement and stick to it, making sure my daily actions match up with my core values and long-term dreams.

The whole framework of these seven habits is super powerful for living a passionate and purposeful life. The first three habits, Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, and Put First Things First, are all about what Covey calls a "Private Victory." They help you build self-control, a clear sense of purpose, and the discipline to follow through. Having that strong internal foundation is crucial; without it, any public success can feel empty or hard to sustain.

On the flip side, the next three habits, Think Win/Win, Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood, and Synergize, focus on what Covey calls "Public Victory." These habits are all about forming genuine, effective relationships rooted in mutual respect and teamwork. In a world that often feels competitive and divided, these practices create trust, understanding, and a spirit of collaboration, which are key for achieving meaningful public success.

Lastly, Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw reminds us to keep renewing and investing in ourselves, physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. This habit helps maintain the energy and enthusiasm we need to pursue our goals, ensuring we don’t burn out along the way.
